Get your free estimateBFT Gate Motor Replacement: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install BFT-compatible gate motor replacements throughout San Diego, with most residential swing-gate motor swaps running between $850 and $1,600 parts and labor, and most slide-gate motor replacements landing between $1,100 and $2,200 depending on the BFT series and what’s already in the ground. If the motor on your gate has seized, stripped its internal gears, or burned out its control board, we can typically have a replacement ordered or pulled from our truck stock and installed within one to two business days.
Most San Diego owners discover the motor has failed the hard way: the gate stops mid-cycle, then refuses to move at all, or it starts making a grinding, chattering noise that wasn’t there a month ago. A quick test is to release the manual override and see if the gate swings or slides freely by hand. If it moves easily without the motor, the problem is almost certainly the operator, not the gate itself.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has built gate operators for decades, and their motor designs fall into a few broad families. The most common units we replace in San Diego driveways are from the Phobos and Deimos lines (swing-gate actuators), the Rigel and Kustos series (slide-gate motors), and the older Icaro and E5 boards that pair with them. Hydraulic BFT operators, like the Sub and Hydra lines, need different motor and pump service than the electromechanical units, and we handle both.
Here’s the part most people miss: the motor is not always the only thing that failed. On a BFT swing operator, a seized motor often takes the capacitor with it, and a short in the motor windings frequently damages the control board relay on the way out. If we only swap the motor and ignore the board, you’ll be calling us back in six weeks with the same symptom. That’s why we bench-test the full operator before quoting the replacement, and why our written estimate lists every part we’re replacing, not just the headline motor.
For identifying your unit, the data plate on the side of the operator housing carries the series name and voltage. If the plate is faded or missing, we can identify the motor by its mounting pattern and shaft dimensions. BFT made running changes between production years, so two Phobos units from different years may not accept the same replacement motor without an adapter plate or a revised control board. We carry the common adapters on the truck.
Portcullis Gate Repair San Diego is an independent service provider and not affiliated with BFT. We stock OEM BFT replacement motors where availability and price make sense, and we also install proven aftermarket equivalents from manufacturers we trust. The aftermarket option is often $150 to $300 less expensive and carries the same written guarantee we give on every repair, but we won’t push it if your unit has an active BFT warranty.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- The gate slows down noticeably over a few weeks. A tired BFT motor with worn brushes or a degrading capacitor loses torque gradually. You may not notice it until the gate starts tripping the obstruction sensor and reversing halfway through its cycle, which is the control board compensating for a motor that can’t keep up.
- You hear a humming or buzzing but no movement. The motor is receiving power but the rotor isn’t turning. On BFT electromechanical operators this usually means a failed capacitor or a stripped internal gear, and continuing to hold the button down just overheats the windings until the thermal overload cuts out permanently.
- The gate slams or runs jerky through its travel. A failing motor can’t modulate speed the way the board is asking it to, so you get lurching movement. On hydraulic BFT units this symptom often points to a failing pump motor starving the hydraulic circuit of pressure.
- The operator trips its breaker repeatedly. A BFT motor drawing excessive current is the classic sign of shorting windings or a seized bearing. The breaker is doing its job; the motor is telling you it’s done.
- The gate works intermittently and then only when tapped with a tool handle. This is how many BFT motors die: worn internal brushes lose contact, and a physical tap gets them seated long enough for one more cycle. If you’re at the tapping stage, the replacement is overdue.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Diego, a BFT swing-gate motor replacement on a Phobos or Deimos unit typically runs $850 to $1,600 installed, including the motor, capacitor if needed, travel limit reset, force adjustment, and a full cycle test. Slide-gate motors in the Rigel and Kustos lines run $1,100 to $2,200 because the drive assembly is larger and the rack engagement has to be re-verified after the swap. Hydraulic BFT operators fall between those ranges depending on whether the problem is the pump motor or the actuator itself.
What drives the range? Voltage is one factor: 24V motors cost less to replace than 115V or 230V units. Whether your board needs replacing alongside the motor is another, and so is the condition of the mounting hardware and limit-switch assembly. We quote the entire repair in writing before any work starts, with the parts and labor separated, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for. Every BFT motor replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within that year, we return and make it right at no charge.
| Replacement Scope | Typical Installed Range (San Diego) |
|---|---|
| BFT swing-gate motor (Phobos, Deimos) | $850 – $1,600 |
| BFT slide-gate motor (Rigel, Kustos) | $1,100 – $2,200 |
| BFT hydraulic operator motor/pump service | $1,000 – $1,900 |
| Control board replacement (if failed with motor) | $350 – $650 additional |
| Capacitor replacement (common co-failure) | $60 – $120 |
We also stock replacement motors and parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates if you have multiple operators on the property and want everything serviced in one visit.
DIY or Call Us?
I’ll be straight with you: replacing a BFT gate motor is not a weekend DIY job, and the electrical side of it is the reason why. Even a 24V DC unit carries enough inrush current to weld a screwdriver tip to the wrong terminal, and a 115V or 230V BFT operator can deliver a genuinely dangerous shock. Beyond that, the motor swap requires resetting the limit switches so the gate stops exactly where it should, and a mis-set limit on a slide gate means the gate crashes into the end stop at full speed or, worse, fails to stop where it should and damages the rack.
The safe owner checks are simple: confirm the breaker isn’t tripped, release the manual override and make sure the gate itself moves freely, and listen for whether the motor hums without turning. Those three observations tell us a lot before we even arrive. After that, the work belongs to a trained technician who has done the swap before, and you can reach ours at (619) 793-3558. Every replacement is quoted in writing before we touch a single bolt.
FAQs
Most BFT gate motors in San Diego last 8 to 12 years, but motors installed in direct afternoon sun or within a few miles of the coast often burn out sooner. Heat degrades the winding insulation, and salt air corrodes the internal connections and brush holders. A shaded, ventilated motor housing can add two or three years of service life. If your BFT operator is past the eight-year mark and showing symptoms, a proactive replacement is usually cheaper than an emergency swap. Call (619) 793-3558 and we’ll quote it over the phone.
Sometimes, yes, if the failure is a capacitor or worn brushes and the motor itself still turns smoothly. But once BFT motor windings short out or the internal gears strip, repair costs approach replacement costs and the repaired motor won’t carry the same lifespan. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in after a bench test, and we only recommend replacement when repair doesn’t make financial sense. Get the straight answer with one call to (619) 793-3558.
Most BFT motor replacements take two to four hours on-site for a swing gate and three to five hours for a slide gate, assuming we have the correct motor matched to your unit. We confirm the part number before the appointment so we’re not making two trips. If a control board also needs replacing, add about an hour. We work until the gate cycles cleanly three times in a row before we call the job done.
We keep common BFT Phobos, Deimos, Rigel, and Kustos replacement motors and capacitors on our San Diego trucks, along with generic control boards that work across multiple series. Less common hydraulic and older discontinued units may need a one-day part order, which we’ll confirm on the phone before you commit. Call (619) 793-3558, tell us what the data plate says, and we’ll tell you if it’s a same-visit fix or a next-day order.
