Linear Access Control Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

If your Linear access control system has stopped reading keypads, fried a circuit board, or quit triggering the gate opener entirely, here’s the short version: we stock Linear-compatible access control parts on our service trucks across San Diego, and a full access control installation or replacement typically runs $340 to $890 parts and labor depending on the system. Most single-door or single-gate access control swaps are done same-day once we’re on site. You usually discover the failure the hard way: a keypad that blinks but won’t accept codes, a card reader that beeps without releasing the gate, or a lightning strike that takes out the controller board and leaves the whole system dead. We carry the parts to fix it right the first time, and we give you a written price before we turn a single screw.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear built access control for decades under several series lines, and the model number tells you most of what we need to know before we arrive. The common ones we service in San Diego include the AE-100, AE-500, and AE-1000 telephone entry and access control systems, plus the AK-11, AK-21, and AK-31 digital keypads and the AM-KP keypad paired with gate operators. Older Linear RE-1 and RE-2 receivers still show up on gates in neighborhoods like Clairemont and La Mesa, and they’re getting harder to source as manufacturers phase out legacy parts. The compatibility gotcha with Linear: many keypads from the AK series look nearly identical on the outside but use different wiring protocols internally, so matching the exact model number printed on the backplate or inside the housing matters more than the button layout. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, we’ve had better long-term results with OEM Linear parts where they’re still available, but for discontinued boards we use quality aftermarket equivalents that match the original voltage and relay specs. San Diego’s coastal salt air accelerates corrosion on exposed keypad contacts and relay terminals, so we prefer sealed replacement parts rated for outdoor exposure when the install location is within a few miles of the coast.

One spec that catches people off guard: Linear access control boards are typically rated for 12 – 24 V AC/DC input, but the standby current draw varies by board revision. If a previous installer sized the transformer for the old board and we’re swapping in a newer revision, the power supply sometimes needs upgrading too. That’s the kind of thing we check before quoting, not after.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. This usually points to a failed relay on the controller board. The keypad still powers up and beeps, but the switching component that actually closes the circuit to the gate operator has burned out, often after years of cycling or a nearby power surge.
  • Card reader beeps but won’t recognize any fobs. The reader’s antenna can drift off frequency or corrode at the connection points, especially on outside-mounted readers near the coast. Sometimes re-flashing the board helps; sometimes the reader itself is done.
  • System works intermittently, usually worse in damp weather. Moisture getting into the housing or wicking up through the conduit is a very common failure mode we see from Point Loma up through Oceanside. Water in the enclosure shorts low-voltage terminals and causes flaky behavior that comes and goes.
  • Relay chatters or clicks rapidly when triggered. That rapid clicking is usually a power supply problem more than a board problem. A failing transformer can’t hold stable voltage under load, so the relay tries to engage over and over. Swapping the board won’t fix a weak transformer.
  • Telephone entry system rings but won’t open the gate. On Linear AE-series telephone entry units, this is typically a relay failure or a programming reset after a power outage. If the system lost its programming memory, every stored tenant code and phone number may need to be re-entered.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Linear access control installation or replacement in San Diego, here are the price ranges we quote most often:

  • Single keypad replacement (AK-11, AK-21, AK-31): $180 – $340 parts and labor
  • Complete access control board swap (AE-100/AE-500 class): $340 – $590 parts and labor
  • Full telephone entry system replacement (AE-1000 class): $520 – $890 parts and labor
  • Power supply or transformer replacement: $120 – $230 parts and labor
  • Card reader or receiver replacement: $220 – $410 parts and labor

Those are installed prices, meaning the part, the labor, the programming, and the testing are all in the number you see. What drives the range is whether we’re matching an existing enclosure or fishing new wire through conduit, whether the old transformer can stay or needs upgrading, and how many user codes or fobs need to be programmed in. Every quote is written down before we start, and the Kingswell Guarantee means that written price doesn’t change unless you ask us to add scope. If the repair fails within 365 days, we come back and make it right at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a real safety line here, and it’s mainly about low-voltage wiring versus line voltage. You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm the keypad has power, check for obvious water in the enclosure, and make sure no wire has pulled loose from a terminal block. That’s fair game. Where DIY goes sideways is when someone opens the gate operator cabinet and starts probing around the high-voltage side, or when they wire a new keypad with the power still live and short a terminal. An access control board runs on low voltage, but the gate operator it controls runs on 120V or 240V, and that cabinet is not where you want to learn by trial and error. The other common DIY miss is programming: Linear systems store codes in specific memory slots, and one wrong keystroke wipes the whole directory. We’d rather you call us at (619) 793-3558 and let Dean Prescott and the crew sort it out than spend a Saturday afternoon resetting a board and hoping for the best.
