Elite Hinge & Roller Replacement: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

We stock Elite-compatible hinge and roller kits on our trucks across San Diego, and most replacements run $240 to $430 parts and labor depending on gate weight and hinge configuration. We can usually swap a failed set same-day when we’re already in your part of town.

You’ll typically notice it before you see it: the gate starts dragging at the latch end, the gap at the top of the post opens up, or you hear a groan every time the gate cycles. What’s happening is the roller has worn flat or the hinge pin has wallowed out its bore, and the gate is now hanging on the operator instead of the hardware. Left alone, that puts strain on the Elite operator’s gearbox, and a gearbox replacement costs a lot more than hinge work.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

This repair covers Elite SL3000, SL4000, and SL4200 series swing gates, plus the CL series on commercial properties. The hinge and roller setup differs by gate leaf weight: lighter residential leaves under 600 pounds use the standard two-hinge configuration with a sealed roller at the latch post, while heavier leaves and full-perimeter commercial gates need three hinges and a heavier roller assembly rated for continuous cycles.

The quickest way to identify what you have is to look at the hinge plate. Elite stamps the part number on the plate edge, usually starting with “EL-H” for hinges and “EL-R” for rollers. If the stamp is worn off, measure the plate width: 4-inch plates are standard residential, 5-inch plates are the heavy-duty commercial spec. One gotcha we see often: aftermarket hinge plates that fit the bolt pattern but are 3/16-inch thinner than Elite OEM. They flex under load and accelerate pin wear. We stock OEM Elite parts and one quality aftermarket line we’ve tested for over a decade, and we’ll tell you which makes sense for your gate weight before we order anything.

Signs Your Elite Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

The good news is this part usually gives you warning. Here’s what to look for:

  • Gate drags or scrapes at the latch side. The roller has worn flat and is no longer carrying the leaf. The gate now rests on the latch post, which is why you’ll see bare metal or a groove forming.
  • Visible sag at the free end. When closed, the top of the gate leaf sits noticeably lower at the latch side than at the hinge side. You’re looking at 1/4 inch or more of drop, which means hinge pin wear, not just roller wear.
  • Groaning or squeaking during the cycle. Worn hinge pins run metal on metal. A shot of lubricant quiets it for a few days, but if the sound comes back, the pin is already ovaled out.
  • The gate bounces or shudders when the Elite operator stops. When hinges have play, the operator’s limit-switch stop feels sloppy because the gate leaf keeps moving after the arm stops. That slop eventually hammers the operator’s internal stops.
  • Uneven gap at the top of the gate post. Stand behind the gate and look at the gap between the leaf and the hinge post. If one hinge shows a wider gap than the other, the hinge leaf itself is bending or the post fasteners have loosened.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Diego, expect a standard two-hinge Elite residential swing gate replacement to run between $240 and $340 including the parts and our labor. A three-hinge heavy leaf or a commercial CL series gate typically lands between $350 and $430, plus the cost of any post repair if the hinge fasteners have stripped the mounting points.

The range depends on three things: whether we’re replacing just the rollers or both hinges and rollers, the weight class of your leaf, and whether the post holes need re-drilling and sleeving. You’ll get the price in writing before we touch a single bolt. Every hinge and roller replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if that hardware fails within a year of installation, we come back and fix it at no charge. Free return visit included.

DIY or Call Us?

An Elite hinge swap looks simple: four bolts per plate. But the gate leaf needs to be supported at the right height while the old hardware comes off, and if you get it slightly wrong, the leaf drops and bends the operator arm or cracks the post. We regularly repair DIY hinge jobs where a rented jack shifted mid-install and left the gate hanging on the hydraulic cylinder.

What you can safely do is diagnose: check the sag, look for flat spots on the roller, wiggle the gate and feel for play. That helps you describe the problem accurately when you call. The safe part is knowing your gate’s weight and hardware spec, which we’ll confirm when we arrive. If you want it fixed without risking the operator, call us at (619) 793-3558. We’ll give you a real price range over the phone and a written quote before any work starts.
