Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

Most Elite keypad and intercom repairs in San Diego run between $185 and $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a keypad face, a control board, or the entire intercom module. We stock Elite-compatible keypads and intercom parts on our trucks, so a single visit usually gets your gate talking again the same day. The typical call starts with a homeowner who punched in their code, heard nothing, and spent ten minutes wondering if it was the keypad, the wiring, or the gate operator itself. In our experience it’s usually the keypad membrane or a corroded intercom speaker, but we’ll walk through what’s actually failing below.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite gate operators have shipped with a rotating set of keypad and intercom configurations over the years, and the part that fails is rarely a universal drop-in. The most common Elite keypads we replace in San Diego are the wired digital keypads used with the SL-3000, SL-2000, and UL series slide and swing operators, along with the flush-mount intercom call stations that pair with Elite’s telephone entry systems. The compatibility gotcha with Elite is the connector style: older Elite keypads used a screw-terminal block, while the newer boards use a 4-pin JST-style plug. They are not interchangeable without cutting and re-terminating wires, and if your board has the screw terminals, you need the screw-terminal keypad or an adapter harness. We carry both styles on the truck.

Before you order anything online, look at the sticker on the back of the existing keypad or the model tag on the operator control board. Write down the model and board revision. Elite’s part numbering has changed more than once, and a keypad that fits an SL-3000 from 2015 may not fit the 2023 revision without a different faceplate. For intercom modules, the two-wire analog call stations are the easiest to match, while the newer IP-based video intercoms require a firmware-compatible replacement. Where a genuine Elite part is weeks out, we offer a quality aftermarket equivalent that matches the connector and weather rating, and we tell you upfront which one we’re quoting.

Portcullis Gate Repair San Diego is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Elite, but we service Elite equipment every week and we stock parts for it alongside LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators.

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keys need to be pressed hard or repeatedly. The elastomeric membrane under the keypad face has worn through or the contacts have oxidized. This is the most common failure we see, and it starts as “sometimes it works” and ends as “the gate won’t open at all.”
  • The keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. That usually means the keypad itself is fine and the problem is downstream: a relay on the control board, a broken wire at the hinge point, or a failed receiver input. We chase the beep to find the actual break.
  • Intercom audio is scratchy, one-way, or dead. In San Diego’s coastal air, the speaker terminals inside the intercom module corrode steadily. If you’re near Point Loma, Mission Beach, or Pacific Beach, salt air shortens intercom speaker life measurably compared to inland neighborhoods like Poway or Santee.
  • The keypad lights up but the code isn’t accepted. This can be a memory failure on the keypad’s controller chip, or the access code has been overwritten by a power surge. We can usually re-flash or replace the keypad and re-program your codes the same day.
  • Water inside the keypad window. Once a keypad housing loses its gasket seal, San Diego’s winter rains finish the job. Condensation behind the lens is the warning sign; a fully fogged keypad is a replacement, not a repair.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Installed Price in San Diego
Wired keypad swap (aftermarket, screw-terminal or JST) $185 – $260
Genuine Elite keypad replacement $240 – $340
Intercom module replacement (analog call station) $275 – $420
Control board relay repair (if board is salvageable) $160 – $240
Full keypad + intercom replacement package $390 – $580

Those prices include the part, labor, re-programming your existing codes, and a written guarantee. What moves the number: whether your Elite operator needs the older screw-terminal keypad or the newer plug style, whether the intercom module is a simple two-wire analog unit or a newer IP video model, and how much wiring repair has to happen where the cable runs through the gate hinge. You get the price in writing before any work starts, and that price does not change at the end. Every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the keypad or intercom fails inside a year, we return and correct it at no charge, and that return visit is free too. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, in writing on every invoice we leave behind.

DIY or Call Us?

A keypad or intercom runs on low voltage, so this is not a high-voltage electrical hazard like a gate main panel. But the honest truth from Dean Prescott and the crew is that DIY keypad swaps on Elite operators go wrong in predictable ways. The two big ones: mismatched connector styles that leave owners splicing wires they shouldn’t, and water intrusion from keypad housings that weren’t sealed properly after the swap. A keypad that works for two weeks and dies in the first rain is a very common story we hear. If you want to check anything yourself, check the obvious: the keypad’s mounting screws for rust, the gasket for cracks, and whether the wiring at the gate hinge is pinched or exposed. After that, the fastest path to a working gate is calling (619) 793-3558. We’ll give you a real price range over the phone before the truck rolls.
