Most BFT keypad and intercom repairs in San Diego run between $185 and $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a keypad membrane, a control board, or the entire intercom module. We stock BFT-compatible keypads, intercom panels, and wiring components on our trucks, so we can usually complete the repair on the first visit. The way most homeowners discover a failing BFT keypad is gradual: a button that needs three presses to register, a display that flickers, or a guest calling from the intercom and you can’t hear a word they’re saying.
Dean Prescott has seen hundreds of these exact failures across San Diego, from newer BFT Deimos systems in Mission Hills to aging BFT Mitto units in Encinitas. The pattern is always the same: outdoor electronics degrade, and the failure almost never fixes itself. We’re an independent gate repair company, not affiliated with BFT, but we’ve serviced their equipment for years and keep the right parts on hand to get your gate working again.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has built several distinct keypad and intercom lines over the years, and the parts are not interchangeable across all of them. The main series we work on in San Diego includes:
- BFT Mitto Series: The Mitto keypads are flush-mount, die-cast aluminum, and typically wired into a BFT control board with a two-wire or four-wire connection. These are common on Italian-imported gates and some high-end residential installs.
- BFT Deimos Series: Deimos intercom modules are surface-mount and often paired with an external keypad. The Deimos BT and Deimos Ultra variants have different mounting footprints, so you can’t swap one for the other without modifying the gate pillar.
- BFT Rigel and Nimbus: Older analog intercom systems still running in some San Diego neighborhoods like Point Loma and La Jolla. Replacement parts for these are harder to source, but we can often rebuild the existing module rather than replace it.
To identify what you have, look for the model label on the inside of the keypad housing or on the back of the intercom panel. BFT stamps a small metal or plastic tag with the model and serial number. If that tag is sun-bleached and unreadable (which happens fast in San Diego’s inland heat), take a photo of the keypad and the gate operator itself and send it to us before we arrive. A compatibility gotcha worth knowing: BFT keypads from the Mitto line will not communicate with a Deimos control board without a signal converter, and the converter itself costs more than some aftermarket keypads. We’d rather tell you that before quoting a part than show up and discover it on site.

Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Buttons need multiple presses or hard pressure. This almost always means the membrane or micro-switch layer inside the keypad has worn out. Coastal San Diego salt air accelerates this corrosion, especially in neighborhoods within a mile of the ocean like Carlsbad and Del Mar.
- Keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t respond. The keypad may still be sending a signal, but the control board isn’t receiving it. This is usually a wiring fault at the terminal block or a failing relay on the board itself, not the keypad.
- Intercom audio is garbled, one-way, or dead. Intercom speakers and microphones fade over time. Sometimes it’s just a corroded wire connection at the back of the panel; other times the amplifier circuit on the intercom board has finally given out.
- Codes work intermittently. If your entry codes work in the morning but fail in the afternoon heat, that’s a classic sign of a failing voltage regulator inside the keypad. Inland San Diego cities like Santee and El Cajon see daytime temperatures that stress these components.
- Water intrusion or visible corrosion behind the faceplate. Once moisture gets past the gasket, the internal traces on the circuit board start to corrode. A keypad that’s fogged up inside is a keypad on borrowed time.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what BFT keypad and intercom work typically costs in San Diego, parts and labor included:
| Repair Type | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Keypad membrane or button replacement | $185 – $260 |
| Full keypad replacement (aftermarket compatible) | $240 – $340 |
| Full keypad replacement (BFT OEM) | $310 – $420 |
| Intercom module repair or rebuild | $220 – $380 |
| Complete keypad + intercom replacement | $420 – $680 |
What drives the range is whether we can rebuild your existing unit or need to swap in a full replacement, and whether you prefer BFT OEM parts or a quality aftermarket equivalent. We quote the price in writing before any work begins, and that price doesn’t change unless you ask us to do additional work beyond the original scope. Every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the keypad or intercom fails within a year of our repair, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s written on your invoice, not just said over the phone.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things a San Diego homeowner can safely check before calling us. First, confirm the gate operator itself still has power and cycles from the primary remote or push-button. Second, visually inspect the keypad and intercom for obvious physical damage or water inside the housing. That’s it. Keypad and intercom wiring runs at low voltage, so the electrical risk is modest, but the real danger is misdiagnosing the problem and buying a $200 part that doesn’t solve it because the actual fault is in the control board or the wiring run underground. We’ve had customers in Poway buy three different keypads online before calling us, and the problem turned out to be a chewed wire at the gate hinge. If you want to skip that particular adventure, call (619) 793-3558 and we’ll diagnose it properly the first time.
FAQs
Inland, a well-installed BFT keypad typically lasts 5 to 8 years. Coastal homes in San Diego often see 3 to 5 years out of the same unit because salt air corrodes the internal contacts faster. Intercom modules have a similar lifespan, though the speakers tend to fail before the electronics do.
Sometimes, yes. If the failure is a worn membrane, a corroded wire connection, or a failed relay, we can rebuild the unit on-site for less than a full replacement. If the main circuit board has failed or water has damaged multiple traces, replacement is the more reliable option and we’ll tell you that plainly.
Most keypad-only replacements take 45 to 90 minutes on site. A full keypad and intercom replacement with new wiring typically runs 2 to 3 hours. We’ll give you a real arrival window when you book, and we show up in it.
We carry the most common BFT keypad models, intercom modules, wiring, and connectors on our service trucks. For less common or older BFT parts, we can usually source them within 48 hours from our San Diego suppliers. Call (619) 793-3558 and tell us the model number so we can confirm before we arrive.
