DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

DoorKing keypad and intercom repair in San Diego typically runs $220 to $480 installed, and we stock compatible replacement parts for most DoorKing 1800, 1600, and 1500 series systems on our trucks. If your keypad is dead, sticking, or the intercom stopped ringing the house phone, we can usually have it diagnosed and swapped same visit, no return trip needed. Most San Diego owners discover the failure on a Monday morning, right when a delivery driver can’t get ahold of anyone at the house, or when a tenant in a Rancho Bernardo rental property starts complaining the gate won’t open from the call box.

We’re Portcullis Gate Repair San Diego, an independent gate repair company, and while DoorKing builds a solid product, the keypad and intercom are the parts that take the most abuse. They sit outside in salt air, full sun, and whatever the Santa Ana winds decide to throw at them. When they fail, the gate usually still works from the remote, which tells you the operator is fine, the access control is the problem.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

Most DoorKing telephone entry and keypad systems in San Diego fall into three families: the 1800 series (the newer MicroCLICK and MicroPLUS models), the 1600 series (the older blue-faced units you’ll still see all over Mira Mesa and Chula Vista), and the 1500 series (the compact flush-mount models used on pedestrian gates and some commercial lobbies). The 1600 series keypads use a membrane-style faceplate that wears through after five to eight years of direct sun. The 1800 series uses individual tactile buttons that hold up better, but the circuit board behind them is more sensitive to moisture intrusion.

Here’s a compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: DoorKing keypads are not all interchangeable across series. A 1600 keypad will not plug into an 1800 board without a retrofit harness, and even then, the mounting holes don’t align. If you have the original installation paperwork, great, but if not, look at the label inside the unit. DoorKing stamps the model and revision on a white tag near the bottom of the control board. We always verify that before quoting a replacement part.

We use OEM DoorKing parts when the unit is under a year old or when the customer specifically asks for factory components. For older systems, we often recommend a quality aftermarket equivalent that matches the original specs, often at forty to sixty percent below OEM list price. We’ll show you both options with the written price before any work starts, so you decide what makes sense for your budget and how long you plan to keep the property.

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Buttons need to be pressed hard or multiple times. The membrane or tactile switches under the keys are wearing out. You’ll notice it first on the numbers you use most, like your main entry code digits. This doesn’t get better on its own.
  • The intercom rings but nobody can hear you, or you can’t hear them. On DoorKing systems, this is usually the speaker/microphone module or a corroded wire at the phone jack. Coastal San Diego air accelerates the corrosion on exposed terminals.
  • The unit powers up but won’t dial the house phone. On older 1600 series systems, the built-in phone transformer or the relay that triggers the call often fails after eight to ten years. If you’ve switched to VoIP phone service, that’s a separate compatibility issue we’ll address on site.
  • Intermittent operation, works sometimes, dead other times. This is the classic heat-related failure. The circuit board expands and contracts with San Diego’s temperature swings, and a cracked solder joint or failing capacitor makes contact only when the board is warm or cold enough.
  • You see moisture or fog inside the lens. DoorKing housings are well-gasketed, but nothing survives forever. Once moisture gets inside, rust and corrosion will start eating the board within weeks. This is the one we’d tell you to address immediately, not next month.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For DoorKing keypad and intercom repair in San Diego, here’s what we tell people before they even schedule a visit:

  • Keypad faceplate or membrane replacement: $180 to $280 installed, depending on series.
  • Full keypad assembly (housing, buttons, board): $240 to $380 installed.
  • Intercom speaker/mic or phone module replacement: $200 to $350 installed.
  • Complete telephone entry system replacement (worst case): $450 to $800 installed, depending on whether your mounting post and power supply can be reused.

Every quote includes the part, the labor, the service call, and our written Kingswell Guarantee on the repair. You get the price in writing before we loosen a single bolt, and that price is the price. If we find something else while we’re in there, we stop and explain it before doing anything, no surprise line items at the end.

DIY or Call Us?

DoorKing keypads run on low voltage, typically 16 to 24 volts from the gate operator’s transformer. That’s not enough to hurt you, but the components inside are static-sensitive, and a wrong wire landed on the wrong terminal can fry the main control board, which turns a $200 keypad repair into an $800 board replacement. If you’re comfortable checking the obvious things, you can safely verify that the breaker for the gate is on, that the wiring at the keypad looks clean and tight, and that no ants or spiders have built a home inside the housing (that happens more than we’d like in San Diego). But if the issue is a dead board, a failed intercom module, or intermittent operation, that’s where we’d recommend a pro. One wrong move on a DoorKing board and you’re buying more parts than you needed to.

Dean Prescott, our owner, learned the electrical side of this trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells everyone: if a component has a circuit board attached to it, leave it to someone who does this every week. Call (619) 793-3558 and we’ll give you a straight answer about what’s wrong and what it costs to fix.
