Ghost Controls welding and fabrication work in San Diego typically runs $280 to $640 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing a cracked gate bracket, reinforcing a bent post, or fabricating a custom mounting plate for your operator. Most jobs are completed the same day because we stock steel stock, weld rod, and the common Ghost Controls brackets on our trucks. The way most San Diego owners discover they need welding work is the same story: the gate starts sagging, the operator strains, and a close look reveals a stress crack where the actuator arm mounts to the gate frame.
We’re an independent gate repair company, not affiliated with Ghost Controls, but we service their equipment daily. Dean Prescott and our crew have been cutting, welding, and reinforcing gate hardware across San Diego since 2008, so this isn’t a side project for us. It’s the core of what we do.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Welding and fabrication needs apply to nearly every Ghost Controls system: the AXDP, AXP, and TSS1 swing-arm kits, plus the GTR series dual-gate configurations. The part that most often needs welding help is the gate bracket, the steel plate that bolts to your gate and accepts the actuator arm clevis pin. Ghost Controls ships a zinc-plated bracket that works fine on a lightweight tube-steel gate in mild climates, but on a heavier ornamental iron gate near the coast, that bracket becomes the first thing to fatigue. Salt air, consistent wind off the Pacific, and the constant in-and-out cycling of a daily-use gate puts stress right at the weld points. We see this pattern regularly in Point Loma, La Jolla, and Coronado, where marine air accelerates metal fatigue faster than inland neighborhoods like Rancho Bernardo or Escondido.
Identifying your specific part is straightforward. The model number is printed on the operator cover and on the original paperwork. If the sticker has faded, measure the distance between the two bracket bolt holes: most Ghost Controls single-arm kits use a two-bolt pattern spaced at 3.5 inches on center. For OEM versus aftermarket, we recommend OEM Ghost Controls brackets when they’re available and the gate is within weight spec. For heavier gates or repeated bracket failures, we fabricate thicker steel brackets in-house, typically 1/4-inch plate, drilled to the exact pattern of your operator arm. That’s a better long-term answer than the stock stamped bracket for a gate that has already cracked once.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the hinge side, but the hinges themselves are tight. This is the classic cracked weld on the gate frame itself, usually at a crossmember or at the vertical stile where the operator arm pushes. The crack opens under load and closes when the gate rests, so it’s easy to miss until the gate starts dragging on the drive.
- The operator arm clunks or pops during the first few inches of travel. The clevis pin hole in the gate bracket has wallowed out from wear, and the pin is hammering inside the bracket. Left alone, the hole elongates further and the bracket can tear through completely.
- The gate moves a few inches, then the operator stops or reverses. A bent or cracked mounting point is binding the actuator arm, tripping the obstruction sensor and confusing the operator. The arm is trying to push a bracket that’s no longer aligned with its travel arc.
- You see a hairline crack at the weld where the post meets the gate frame. San Diego’s swing between dry heat and cool coastal nights causes expansion and contraction that works on welds over time. This is one of the most common calls we get after a heat wave in El Cajon or Santee.
- The gate makes a grinding sound but the wheels or rollers have been serviced recently. The source is often a broken weld inside the gate structure itself, which shifts the whole panel and drags the actuator arm against its own housing.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Diego, expect to pay between $280 and $640 for typical Ghost Controls welding and fabrication work, parts and labor included. A straightforward bracket replacement with a new OEM bracket runs at the lower end, around $280 to $380. If we need to cut out and replace a cracked section of gate frame or fabricate a custom reinforcing plate, you’re in the $420 to $640 range. The price is written before we touch your gate, and it includes the steel, the welding consumables, grinding and cleanup, and re-testing the operator through three complete open/close cycles with the new hardware in place. Every weld carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, written on the invoice, and if the weld or bracket fails within that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Free return visit, no fine print.
What drives the range is gate weight and location: a lightweight 14-gauge tube gate with a single operator is a quick bracket swap, while a solid 1/2-inch bar ornamental gate near the coast needs thicker plate and more time on the grinder to get a clean, lasting repair.

You can safely check a few things yourself: look at the gate bracket for visible cracks, listen for the clunk at start of travel, and see if the gate sags when disconnected from the actuator. What you shouldn’t do is attempt welding on an installed gate. The risk isn’t just a bad bead, it’s the operator arm under tension, the electrical connections running alongside the weld area, and the fact that a poorly welded bracket on an energized gate can shear without warning when the gate cycles. That’s a projectile hazard, and it’s a common cause of the emergency calls we take for operators damaged by someone’s weekend repair. If the bracket is cracked or the gate frame is split, call (619) 793-3558. We’ll give you a written price before we start, and we won’t leave until the gate cycles cleanly three times in a row.
FAQs
A stock Ghost Controls gate bracket on a properly sized gate in a mild inland area like Poway or Scripps Ranch will last 5 to 8 years, but the same bracket on a heavier gate within five miles of the coast often fails in 2 to 4 years due to salt air and constant gate cycling. If your bracket failed early, we’ll show you the crack and give you the option of a thicker fabricated replacement.
In some cases, yes. Small stress cracks can be ground out and re-welded if the base metal is sound. But if the bracket hole is wallowed or the plate has torn, we replace it rather than patch a part that will fail again. We’ll give you an honest recommendation before you approve anything.
Most bracket replacements and gate-frame weld repairs take 1 to 2 hours on site, including grinding, welding, cooling time, and testing the operator through three complete cycles. Heavier fabrication work can run up to 3 hours. Call (619) 793-3558 and we’ll give you a time window and a written price before we unload the welder.
We keep common Ghost Controls swing-arm brackets, clevis pins, and mounting hardware on our service trucks in San Diego, along with steel plate for custom fabrication. For unusual model-specific parts we can source OEM quickly, and we’ll tell you the timeline before any work is approved. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing operators if your system ever changes.
