Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

Linear keypad and intercom repair in San Diego typically runs $185 – $410 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a keypad face, a whole intercom module, or rewiring a corroded junction. We stock Linear-compatible parts on the truck and can usually complete the swap same day. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: the keypad stops accepting the code on a rainy morning, or the intercom crackles, then goes silent, and suddenly nobody can buzz the gate open without getting out of the car. By the time we get the call, someone has usually already spent a weekend trying to clean the circuit board with a toothbrush. We’ll get into why that matters below.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

We work on the full range of Linear gate and door keypads and intercoms that show up across San Diego: the AK-11 and AK-21 exterior digital keypads, the MEGACODE series, the older DVS and SXR access control systems, and the AE-500 and AE-1000 telephone entry intercoms. The model number is printed on a label inside the keypad housing, on the back of the intercom faceplate, or on the control board near the terminal block. If the label is sun-bleached or gone, we match by wire count, voltage, and mounting footprint. One compatibility gotcha we run into constantly: a Linear AK-11 wired keypad and a wireless MEGACODE remote look nearly identical to the untrained eye, but the wiring harness and receiver protocol are completely different. If someone swaps the wrong one, the gate operator won’t recognize the signal no matter how many times you re-enter the code.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for Linear keypads, we lean toward genuine Linear or Linear-compatible boards with matching connectors. The aftermarket housings are fine, but the boards inside vary in solder quality, and in coastal San Diego air the cheap ones corrode fast. We’d rather install a part that lasts five years than one that keeps the price down for six months.

Signs Your Linear Keypad or Intercom Is Failing

  • Code works intermittently, then stops entirely. Usually the membrane or mechanical keys have worn through, or moisture has seeped past the gasket and started eating the contact traces. Intermittent is the warning sign; dead is what follows.
  • Intercom audio is faint, scratchy, or one-way. The speaker coil or the condenser mic has degraded, or a wire at the terminal block has gone green with corrosion. San Diego’s marine layer does not do favors to unsealed electronics.
  • Keypad backlight flickers or never lights. The LED ribbon or the driver on the logic board is failing. The keys might still work for a while, but the board is on its way out.
  • Gate opens on its own or won’t close after the code is entered. This points to a stuck relay on the keypad board or a shorted call button on the intercom. It’s not always the operator; often it’s the input device sending a constant signal.
  • You can hear buzzing or clicking from the housing. A failing relay or a damaged capacitor. It usually gets worse, and it’s the kind of thing that eventually takes the operator’s control board with it if left long enough.

We start with a real diagnosis, not a guess. Dean Prescott always has us check the wiring at the junction before we condemn a keypad, because in San Diego the failure is often at the splice, not the board. A $40 wiring repair beats a $300 keypad swap, and we’d rather tell you that before we start turning screws.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what installed Linear keypad and intercom repair pricing looks like in San Diego right now:

  • Keypad-only replacement (AK-11 or equivalent): $185 – $260, parts and labor
  • Wireless MEGACODE keypad with receiver programming: $220 – $310
  • Intercom speaker/mic repair or module swap: $240 – $380
  • Full AE-1000 replacement with new wiring run: $350 – $410

The range comes down to three things: what needs replacing, age of the wiring in the pillar or gate frame, and whether we’re programming a receiver that already exists or adding one. We give you the written price before any work starts, and the labor and parts are broken out separately. If the wiring inside the post is brittle and needs a new run, we tell you that before we pull it. Every keypad and intercom repair carries the Kingswell Guarantee: 365 days, written on the invoice, and if the repair fails inside that window we come back at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what’s safe to do yourself. You can confirm the model number, check the breakers, and re-seat the two-wire connection at the operator if it’s accessible without opening any high-voltage enclosure. Those are the free, no-risk steps. What’s not safe: opening the intercom housing and probing the board with a live wire run, wiring a keypad into the operator’s terminal block without knowing which terminal is the common, or bypassing the ground. These are low-voltage systems, but a wrong splice can fry the operator board, and a keypad install done wrong in a wet post can short and pose a shock risk. If you’ve already opened it up and things got confusing, close the housing and call us at (619) 793-3558. We’ll walk you through what you’re seeing on the phone, and if we can’t solve it in five minutes, we’ll bring the right part to you.
