We stock and install Linear-compatible welding and fabrication parts across San Diego, with most gate frame repairs and bracket rebuilds running $350 – $900 installed depending on the damage. Same-day service is available in most cases because our trucks carry raw steel stock, MIG welding rigs, and the common Linear mounting plates and hinge assemblies that fail first. You’ll usually discover the problem as a sagging gate that scrapes the driveway, a hinge that’s torn off its post, or an operator bracket that cracked clean through and left the motor pushing against nothing but air.
Here’s the thing about welding and fabrication work on a Linear system: the operator itself might be fine. What fails is usually the steel around it. Salt air near Point Loma, morning marine layer moisture in La Jolla, or years of wind load in Rancho Bernardo will eat through a mounting bracket or stress a weld point until it gives. When that happens, the Linear motor keeps doing its job and the gate stops moving the way it should. I’m Dean Prescott, owner of Portcullis Gate Repair San Diego, and this page covers what we see, what it costs, and how fast we can get your gate cycling clean again.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
This covers the full range of Linear swing and slide gate operators we service in San Diego, including the Linear LRA and LRA-S series swing actuators, the SLR slide gate series, and the older APeX and MegaCode-controlled models still running on plenty of San Diego properties. The welding and fabrication side applies to the steel the operator mounts to: hinge plates, post brackets, actuator mounting tabs, slide gate track supports, and the gate frame itself. If your Linear motor mounts to it, we can fabricate or repair it.
The compatibility gotcha for Linear specifically is the actuator mounting geometry. Linear swing actuators use a specific clevis pin spacing and stroke length per model, so a bracket we fabricate has to position the actuator at the exact pivot distance for your gate leaf. Get that wrong by even a half inch and the actuator binds, the limit switches trip early, and the motor burns out early. We measure the leaf width, the hinge offset, and the Linear model’s stroke spec before we cut or weld anything. If you’re not sure what model you have, check the silver tag on the operator housing. It lists the series and voltage. If the tag is gone, a photo of the actuator body and a quick measurement of the mounting pin gap usually tells us what we’re working with.
OEM versus aftermarket matters more on brackets than you’d think. The factory Linear bracket for a given series is punched from specific gauge steel and finished to resist corrosion. A generic gate bracket from a big-box store often isn’t. For most San Diego residential jobs, we fabricate from the same gauge steel as OEM or one step heavier, then prime and paint to match. That gives you the fit of a factory part with the durability of a welded build. For the actuator itself, we recommend genuine Linear or a known-quality equivalent; for the steel around it, we make it in the van.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags and scrapes the driveway on the latch side. This usually means a hinge weld has stretched or a hinge plate has pulled loose from the post. The gate’s own weight is slowly peeling the leaf away from the hinge line, and the Linear operator is working harder every cycle to compensate.
- The operator bracket has cracked or torn away from the gate frame. When the Linear motor pushes, the crack opens slightly and you’ll hear a creak or a metallic pop at the moment the gate starts moving. Left alone, the bracket eventually breaks clean through and the gate won’t open at all.
- The gate stops mid-cycle or reverses for no obvious reason. A bent or failing bracket changes the actuator’s travel angle enough to trip the Linear limit switches early. The operator thinks the gate is fully open or closed when it’s actually six inches short.
- A hinge pin is visibly loose, missing, or worn to an angle. Linear operators tolerate some play, but not this. A sloppy hinge loads the actuator unevenly on every cycle and shortens the motor’s life. This is also the point where the gate starts shaking on startup and shutdown.
- Fresh rust or a crack is visible at any weld point. San Diego’s coastal air accelerates this dramatically. Once a weld starts rusting at the seam, moisture gets inside the joint and the failure is already underway. A visual inspection every few months catches this before it strands the gate.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Diego, most Linear welding and fabrication repairs run between $350 and $900 installed. A simple hinge plate re-weld or bracket reinforcement is at the lower end. Rebuilding a hinge assembly with new steel and a fresh pin runs mid-range, and fabricating a complete custom mounting assembly for a misaligned Linear actuator is at the upper end. The range depends on material thickness, how much of the old steel is salvageable, and how much cutting we have to do to reach the work.
Every quote includes both parts and labor, and the price we agree on before we start is the price on the invoice when we finish. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee and we don’t bend it. The weld work and fabrication carry the same 365-Day Done Right Promise as every other repair we do: if it fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. For heavier commercial gates or custom builds, we’ll give you the written price after we measure and inspect the site.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things safely: look for visible cracks at weld points, check that hinge pins aren’t badly worn, and watch the gate for a full cycle to see where it hesitates or shakes. That’s useful information and it helps us quote faster when you call.
What you shouldn’t do is fire up a welder on a gate that’s holding a Linear operator under tension. A sagging or misaligned gate stores energy in the leaf and in the actuator’s internal spring, and cutting the wrong support first can drop several hundred pounds of steel faster than you can react. MIG welding also requires clean metal, proper amperage settings, and the right gas mix for galvanized or powder-coated steel, and a cold weld on a gate hinge looks fine right up until it isn’t. If the bracket is cracked, the hinge is torn, or the gate doesn’t move freely through its full arc, call us at (619) 793-3558. We’ll bring the steel, the welder, and a written price before we strike an arc.
FAQs
A properly welded and painted hinge or bracket repair on a Linear gate in San Diego typically lasts 10 to 15 years before coastal corrosion starts working on the steel again. Inland areas like Poway or Scripps Ranch see even longer life. The key is full seam coverage on the weld and a solid paint or powder coat finish over it, which we do on every fabrication job.
Usually yes. A cracked bracket can be ground back, welded, and reinforced with a gusset plate that spreads the load across more steel. If the bracket is severely corroded or has already broken into pieces, we fabricate a new one to match the original geometry. We’ll tell you which route makes sense after we see it.
Most residential Linear gate fabrication repairs take two to four hours on site, including cutting out damaged steel, welding in the new material, and priming and painting the work. More involved custom builds or sliding gate track repairs can run longer, and we’ll tell you the real time window before we start.
We stock common gauge steel plate, bar stock, and round tube on the truck for most hinge and bracket work, along with pins, bushings, and hardware sized for Linear actuator mounts. For unusual or heavy commercial sections, we’ll source and prep the material before we arrive so the job still gets done in one visit. Call us at (619) 793-3558 and we’ll tell you what we’d bring for your gate. We also keep parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates for when the repair crosses brands.
If your Linear gate is sagging, cracked, or making noise at the welds, call (619) 793-3558. We’ll give you a straight answer on cost and whether we can fix it same-day, and you’ll get every price in writing before we touch the gate. A written price before we start, a clean cycle before we leave, that’s just how a gate job should go.
