If you own a Viking gate system in San Diego and a weld has cracked, a hinge has torn loose, or a bracket has fatigued to the point of failure, we stock and fabricate Viking-compatible replacement parts and can typically have your gate swinging cleanly again within one to two business days. Most welding and fabrication repairs on Viking gates in San Diego run between $275 and $900 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing the existing steel in place or fabricating a new bracket, gate leaf section, or post mount in our shop. The call usually comes after the gate starts dragging, binding, or sagging badly enough that the opener has to strain to move it, and by the time we arrive, the weld has often been failing for weeks or months.
A quick note up front: Portcullis Gate Repair San Diego is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Viking or any other manufacturer, which means we’re free to give you an honest read on whether a part should be repaired, replaced with OEM, or replaced with a quality aftermarket equivalent. Dean Prescott, our owner and lead technician, grew up fixing things with his own hands and trained at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, where he learned the welding and fabrication fundamentals that still guide every Viking repair we take on. We’ve been at this since 2008, and we treat every welded joint like it’s going to live outside in salt air and sun for the next decade, because in San Diego, that’s exactly what it has to do.
Which Viking Models This Applies To
Viking gate systems show up on residential and commercial properties all over San Diego, from Rancho Bernardo driveways to industrial lots near Miramar and service entrances around Balboa Park. The welding and fabrication work we do applies broadly across Viking’s product line: the G-5 and X-9 swing gate operators, the R-6 and T-21 slide gate operators, and the older Viking F-1 and L-3 series that are still common on San Diego properties that haven’t been retrofitted yet. The fabricated steel components we typically deal with are the gate leaf itself, the hinge plates and post brackets, the operator mounting plate, and the rack or chain brackets on slide systems.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: Viking changed the hole spacing and weld tab placement on their mounting plates a few times over the years, so a bracket off a 2008-era Viking is not always a bolt-on match for a 2018-era unit, even when both are labeled the same series. Before you order or fabricate anything, check the metal tag on the operator housing for the full model number and serial, then measure the bracket bolt spacing center-to-center. That saves you from buying a part that’s off by a quarter inch, which in gate terms might as well be a mile. When the OEM bracket is discontinued or backordered, we often bend and weld a replacement from 1/4-inch steel plate that’s actually a touch heavier than what Viking shipped originally, which matters when you’re two blocks from the coast and the salt air has been eating galvanized brackets for a decade.
Our technicians also service eight other major operator brands, LiftMaster, FAAC, BFT, Linear, Ghost Controls, DoorKing, Elite, and Mighty Mule, so if your property has mixed-brand gates or you’re not sure which system you have, we’ll identify it on the first visit.

Signs Your Viking Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the latch side and drags on the ground. This almost always means a hinge plate weld has cracked or the post has started to lean. The gate’s own weight is the enemy, and once a weld lets go, the whole leaf shifts and binds.
- You can see daylight through a weld joint. A crack that opens and closes as the gate cycles is a failed weld, full stop. It won’t heal, and it’s adding stress to every other joint on the gate every time the opener pushes or pulls it.
- The operator mounting plate flexes or rattles when the gate moves. The plate’s weld tabs are fatiguing. Left alone, the plate tears loose entirely, and suddenly the operator is hanging by its wiring harness, which is a mess nobody wants to deal with at 7 a.m. on a Monday.
- The gate jerks or binds halfway through its travel. On slide gates, this often points to a rack section that’s pulled loose from its welds or a guide roller bracket that’s cracked. The operator keeps pushing, the gate keeps binding, and the motor burns out faster than it should.
- Rust staining runs down from a weld or bolt hole. In San Diego’s coastal zones, especially anywhere west of I-5, mild steel brackets and welds rust from the inside out. The staining means the steel is losing material, and a bracket that looks solid on the outside may be paper-thin where the weld bead meets the plate.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
The honest range for Viking welding and fabrication work in San Diego is $275 to $900 for most jobs. Here’s how that breaks down:
- On-site weld repair of a cracked hinge or bracket: $275 – $450, including grinding out the old weld, prepping the joint, re-welding, and a coat of rust-inhibiting paint or cold galvanizing spray.
- Fabricated replacement bracket or mounting plate (single unit): $350 – $600, including cutting, bending, welding, drilling, and finish coating, plus installation.
- Fabricated gate leaf section or full hinge set replacement: $500 – $900, depending on the size of the leaf, the thickness of the steel required, and how much disassembly is needed to get the old section out.
- Rack or chain bracket re-weld on slide gates: $300 – $550, which includes aligning the rack so the gate tracks straight before the final weld pass.
Every quote is written and agreed to before we strike an arc or unbolt anything. The parts cost is itemized, the labor is itemized, and if the final invoice differs from the written quote by a single dollar, that’s on us, not you. Every repair carries the Kingswell Guarantee in writing: if it fails within 365 days, we return and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That includes a free second visit. No fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
Let’s be straight about this: welding on a gate that weighs 300 to 800 pounds is not a weekend project. The danger is real. A gate leaf under tension, supported by a jack or a block, can drop or shift while the old weld is being ground out, and a person is no match for that kind of weight. High-amperage welding near a powered operator also means dealing with live electrical circuits, and if you don’t isolate the power correctly, you’ll cook the control board or hurt yourself. We’ve seen both happen. This is the time to call someone who welds gates for a living.
What you can safely do is diagnose. Check whether the gate sags when it’s open versus closed. Note where the crack is and whether it’s growing. Test whether the gate binds at a specific point in its travel. That information helps us quote the job accurately over the phone, and you’re welcome to call (619) 793-3558 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a simple re-weld or a full bracket fabrication, and what the likely price range is before anyone gets in a truck.
FAQs
A weld repair done right with proper prep and a rust-inhibiting finish should last 10 to 15 years in most San Diego locations, and 7 to 10 years in coastal zones like La Jolla, Point Loma, and Coronado where salt air works on steel year-round. The weld itself rarely fails; what fails is the surrounding steel if it wasn’t cleaned and coated properly. Our repairs carry a written 365-day guarantee, so if anything we welded fails inside a year, you pay nothing for us to come back. Call (619) 793-3558 and we’ll get it sorted.
Most single cracks in brackets and hinge plates can be repaired in place by grinding out the crack, re-welding the joint, and reinforcing with a gusset plate if the original design was underbuilt. If the bracket is rust-thinned, cracked in multiple places, or has already been welded once and failed again, fabrication of a new bracket is the honest call. We’ll tell you which one you need and put the price in writing before we start. Call (619) 793-3558 for a straight answer on your specific gate.
Most single-bracket weld repairs and small fabrication jobs are done in one visit of 2 to 4 hours on site. Larger fabrications, like a new gate leaf section or a full hinge set, take us a day or two in the shop plus an installation visit. We’ll give you a real arrival window and a completion estimate before the job starts, and we’ll keep both.
We keep common steel stock, hinge plates, and bracket patterns on our trucks, and we can fabricate most mounting plates and reinforcement gussets on site or in our shop the same day. For parts that do need ordering, we’ll give you the lead time and the written price before you commit. Most San Diego Viking repairs are completed without the customer ever needing to source a part themselves.
